Common Purpose is an international leadership organisation that runs programmes for leaders of all ages, sectors and backgrounds. Today I hosted a lunch for delegates from the 2007 intake in Leeds. Up for discussion was my opinion of what makes an entrepreneur and my attitude to risk.
Common Purpose has been helping people in leadership and decision-making positions to be more effective: in their own organisations, in the community and in society as a whole.
As part of this years programme I hosted a lunch today for several delegates to discuss my attitude to risk, entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility (CSR).
I began by providing an introduction for the reasons for founding Chapter Eight, why I did it, what the drivers were and what risks I took in doing so. We moved on to discuss what motivates someone to begin down the long road of starting a business and then had a more in depth discussion about why there aren't more entrepreneurs and business leaders coming out of the education system.
We touched on a number of factors that contribute to a culture of valuing academic achievement over vocational achievements and explored what needs to change in order to build a strong pool of business talent.
Overall, I had a great time talking about Chapter Eight and the other companies I have started or been involved in, I think the Common Purpose delegates left our offices with a clearer understanding of the drivers that make people like me want to achieve and push on.
